About Reach
Reach is a way to understand a language by listening to it. Each episode is a short piece of real speech, news from a German or Portuguese radio show or a little story, with a picture for every sentence. The picture shows what is being said, so you can follow the meaning without translating.
The idea is called comprehensible input: you learn a language by understanding messages in it, a little above your level. The pictures bring real news within reach.
How to use it
- Listen and watch. Don't stop to translate.
- News episodes show subtitles, each piece with its English above it. Tap a word to see its partner in the other language, or turn Subtitles off to listen with only the pictures.
- Slow it down with the speed buttons, and replay a sentence with the replay button.
Where the audio comes from
News episodes play the original broadcast straight from its publisher's website, only the minutes the episode covers. Reach does not copy or host that audio. Each episode links to the full broadcast and to the show:
- Noticiário (opens observador.pt), Observador (Portugal)
- tagesschau in 100 Sekunden (opens tagesschau.de), ARD (Germany)
- DER TAG in Berlin und Brandenburg (opens inforadio.de), rbb24 Inforadio (Germany)
The transcripts, translations and pictures are made for Reach, partly with AI models, and checked by hand. The pictures never show a real person's face. Numbers, maps and calendars are drawn by code from what the speaker says, so they are exact.
